Wavelet analysis of turbulence in cirrus clouds

چکیده
Two ̄ights of the UKMeteorological Oce's Hercules aircraft through daytime frontal cirrus around Scotland have been analysed using wavelet analysis on the vertical velocity time-series from the horizontal runs. It is shown that wavelet analysis is a useful tool for analysing the turbulence data in cirrus clouds. It ®nds the largest scales involved in producing turbulence, as does Fourier analysis, such as the 2-km spectral peaks corresponding to convective activity during ̄ight A283. Wavelet spectra have the added advantage that the position is shown, and so they identify smaller-scale, highly localised processes such as the production of turbulent kinetic energy by the breaking of KelvinHelmholtz waves due to the vertical shear in the horizontal wind. These may be lost in Fourier spectra obtained for long time-series, though they contribute something to the average spectral density at the appropriate scale. The main disadvantage of this technique is that only octave frequency bands are resolved.

MST radar and polarization lindar observations of tropical cirrus
Significant gaps in our understanding of global cirrus effects on the climate system involve the role of frequently occurring tropical cirrus. Much of the cirrus in the atmosphere is largely due to frequent cumulus and convective activity in the tropics. In the Indian sub-tropical region, the deep convective activity is very prominent from April to December, which is a favorable period for the ...
متن کاملCirrus Cloud Properties from a Cloud-Resolving Model Simulation Compared to Cloud Radar Observations
Cloud radar data collected at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program’s Southern Great Plains site were used to evaluate the properties of cirrus clouds that occurred in a cloud-resolving model (CRM) simulation of the 29-day summer 1997 intensive observation period (IOP). The simulation was ‘‘forced’’ by the large-scale advective temperature and water vapor tendencies, horizontal wi...
متن کاملAn explanation for some fallstreak clouds
Fallstreak cirrus clouds are associated with supersaturated air, together with waves, instabilities and/or turbulence; however, their precise cause is usually uncertain. This paper uses already-published satellite, radiosonde and radar data, reanalysed to study some large fallstreaks which had been previously overlooked. The fallstreaks – up to 60 km long with a parent cloud 20 km wide – are ca...

Cirrus cloud detection accuracy of GOSAT/CAI and Landsat-8 is evaluated with a ground based Laser Radar: Lidar data and sky view camera data. Also, the evaluation results are confirmed with Calipso data together with a topographic representation of vertical profile of cloud structure. Furthermore, origin of cirrus clouds is estimated with forward trajectory analysis. The results show that GOSAT...
